Tardy Policy
Fountain Valley School District Tardy Policy
Students are expected to be on time to school and to each class.
Tardiness will only be excused in the following cases:
- Illness
- Medical or dental appointments
- Any identified excusable reason for a full-day absence per California Education Code 46010
Excused tardies must be verified by the parent in person or with a note at the time the student arrives at school.
The following reasons are not considered excused tardies per Education Code:
- Missing the bus
- Oversleeping
- Traffic
- Inclement weather
Consequences for Unexcused Tardies:
- 1st and 2nd unexcused tardy: No detention (warning)
- 3rd and 4th unexcused tardy: 30-minute after-school detention for each occurrence
- 5th and 6th unexcused tardy: 60-minute after-school detention and counseling referral
- 7th unexcused tardy: Saturday School
- 8th unexcused tardy: Principal discretion, which may include:
- School Attendance Contract and parent meeting
- Loss of school-sponsored, non-instructional activities
- Required attendance at a District Attorney meeting
- Referral to the School Attendance Review Board (SARB)
