In 6th Grade Woodshop, students are gaining hands-on experience and discovering that great craftsmanship begins with precision, patience, and perseverance. Through a structured, step-by-step curriculum, middle schoolers learn to identify different types of wood, read detailed construction plans, measure accurately, and safely operate essential hand tools and machinery, including the drill press and band saw.

As their projects progress, students explore a variety of traditional finishing techniques, learning the distinct processes for sanding, staining, applying polyurethane, and oiling their pieces. From building practical tool caddies to hand-crafted wooden boxes, students take pride in seeing raw materials transform into functional, finished products through their own hard work.

Safety remains a top priority across the Fountain Valley School District. On Friday, October 16, students, teachers, and staff across all 10 district campuses actively participated in the annual Great ShakeOut earthquake drill. Held in lieu of the statewide event on October 15, the drill provided an invaluable opportunity for the entire FVSD community to implement our comprehensive earthquake disaster plan and practice essential safety measures before a crisis happens.

At the signal, classrooms immediately put safety protocols into motion. Students and staff executed the crucial "Drop, Cover, and Hold On" posture under desks and tables, protecting themselves from potential falling hazards. Following the simulated shaking, teachers led calm, orderly evacuations to predetermined outdoor assembly areas, where staff conducted swift attendance checks and site leadership tested emergency communication systems.

Middle school is a time of exciting growth, and Masuda Middle School works hard to ensure every student feels supported from day one. Earlier this month, Masuda 6th graders took part in a special October lunchtime engagement activity designed and hosted by our 8th-grade WEB (Where Everybody Belongs) student leaders.

The WEB program pairs energetic 8th-grade mentors with incoming 6th-grade students to ease the transition into middle school. Throughout the school year, WEB leaders host orientation events, campus tours, and collaborative activities that build strong peer connections and boost school spirit across campus.

On Tuesday afternoon, the Assistance League of Huntington Beach proudly recognized 47 Fountain Valley School District staff members, awarding more than $30,000 in instructional grants. This extraordinary community support will directly empower teachers across the district to bring innovative learning opportunities to life in their classrooms.

The grant funding will support a diverse range of engaging projects across multiple grade levels and academic subjects. Students will participate in hands-on science investigations—including real shark dissections—and explore new computer science technology and STEM equipment. Other grant projects focus on foundational skills through decodable reading libraries, interactive mathematics materials, dramatic play experiences, and social-emotional learning resources.

In alignment with last week's district announcement, "FVSD Extreme Heat Advisory: Safety Guidance & Campus Actions," Fountain Valley School District schools have actively adjusted campus routines to keep students safe, hydrated, and comfortable during elevated temperatures.

Demonstrating this commitment in real time, the Physical Education department at Masuda Middle School found an active, high-energy way to keep students moving while protecting them from extreme weather.

Transforming the school's Multi-Purpose Room (MPR) into a cool, air-conditioned sports arena, PE teachers Mr. Garcia and Mr. Sapp guided Monarchs through engaging indoor activities designed to promote physical fitness without exposure to the heat.
